Call for Abstracts

The Human Genetics Society of Australasia invite you to submit abstracts for the HGSA 2020 Virtual Conference.

Abstracts are invited on any aspects relating to human genetics. A maximum of two abstracts* may be submitted per presenting author.

*A maximum of 2 abstracts = 1 oral and 1 poster or 2 poster submissions.

Presentation Types

Oral Presentation

Accepted oral presentations will be allocated 10 min of presentation time which must be pre-recorded, plus 5 minutes of live Q&A time. The presenter must be available at the designated time to be live during their presentation & Q&A. Please refer to the program for session times.

e-Poster

Accepted poster authors will be required to provide a PDF of their poster which will be available for delegates to view in the poster gallery (the poster gallery will be available to delegates at all times over the two days and up to 31 January 2021). 

Authors will also have the opportunity to discuss their poster in the e-poster sessions at designated times over the two days (please refer to the program for times). If you choose to be in an e-poster session then the author must be available at the designated time for live discussion of their poster.

Access to all sessions will also be available on demand, to registered delegates, until 31 January 2021.

Guidelines will be provided once authors have been notified.

Authorisation & Publication of Abstracts

By submitting your abstract, you are consenting to your abstract (if accepted) and presentation material (Poster PDF and/or recorded oral presentation) being made available to registered delegates, in the HGSA Conference portal until 31 January 2021. You also consent to include your abstract/s in the February 2021 Twin Research and Human Genetics Journal. 

Abstract Submission & Instructions

All abstracts must be submitted ONLINE and typed directly into the submission form (abstracts cannot be attached).

When submitting an abstract you will be asked to setup an account with a password, which you can then use to submit additional abstracts as well as edit abstracts until the closing date.

  • Abstracts must be typed in English
  • Abstracts will be typed directly into the submission form. You will be asked to insert Title, Presenting Author & Affiliations / address, Additional Authors & details, and the body of the abstract.
  • Body of the Abstract has a 250 word limit.
  • Abbreviations should be used only for common terms (for uncommon terms, the abbreviation should be given in brackets after the first full use of the word)
  • Abstracts should be thoroughly checked for correct spelling and grammar before finalising the submission.
  • Please ensure that you include all information requested on the abstract submission form.
  • Indicate presentation type (oral or e-poster).
  • Indicate your Special Interest Group membership (if applicable)
  • Indicate under which theme you would like your submission to be considered, and whether your abstract is EESIC-related in topic (education, ethics, policy, legal, insurance or other social issues) or methodology (qualitative or non-empirical).
  • Include a short 100 word biography.
  • Indicate if you wish to be considered for the NIA award (refer to award details here)
  • Complete the authorisation and conflict of interest questions.
  • Final formatting will be undertaken by the Conference Secretariat.
  • A maximum of two abstracts may be submitted per presenting author.

Abstracts will be assessed based on the following criteria:

1. Abstract Quality
2. Hypothesis and Methods
3. Relevance to Prfessional Practice
4. Relevance to Conference Theme

Format & Content

Main body

250 words

The following structure may be followed:

Background: a clear statement about why the study was done

Aim/hypothesis/research question

Methods:

  • lab-based research: a statement(s) about the sample, the methods, analysis
  • clinical/public health type research: a statement(s) about the sample, recruitment, method of data collection, data analysis; for quantitative data, some indication of statistical approach/measures; for qualitative data, some indication of the method and rigour of analysis

Results: sample size (even in qualitative research), include data - avoid saying data will be presented

Discussion/Conclusion: a concluding statement of outcome/significance

    Abstract Acknowledgement

    A confirmation email acknowledging receipt of your abstract submission will be automatically emailed to you once you have completed the online abstract submission. If you do not receive this confirmation email, or wish to make changes to your abstract, please contact the Conference Secretariat.

    Please note that all correspondence will be sent to the e-mail address from which the submitted abstract was received. All presenters will be required to register for the meeting and have paid the registration fee, before gaining access to the virtual platform.
